HISTORY

Rich and Rhine was founded as a candy and tobacco distributor in 1946 by John Rich and Jack Rhine. In the following decade, Mr. Rich’s son entered the business after a stint in the service and a young salesman at the company, Ron Owens, purchased Mr. Rhine’s share of the business. The business of Rich and Rhine continued to grow through the next decade, largely by acquisition of smaller competitors. In the late 1970s, ownership needed administrative support, so they brought in an additional partner, local tavern owner, John Mullen.

Rich and Rhine moved to their current location in Northeast Portland in the mid-1980s, expanding their warehouse space to about 18,000 square feet. By the mid-90s, the warehouse capacity more than doubled in size as the company became a full-line distributor with the addition of grocery, frozen, and deli items.

The original ownership group sold the business to United Grocers in 1995, which subsequently sold three years later to current ownership, KIT Financial (owned and operated by Michael Krupp). Michael, and his son, Robert Krupp, are actively involved on the board of Rich and Rhine today, providing advisory support to the veteran management team as the industry continues to develop and evolve.
